FIRST WIVES CLUB - NEW BROADWAY MUSICAL

The musical stage version of the film, "The First Wives Club A New Musical" is scheduled to play at The Old Globe in San Diego from July 15, 2009 through August 23, 2009 prior to a Broadway engagement. The book is by Rupert Holmes with a score by Lamont Dozier, Brian Holland and Eddie Holland, and direction by Francesca Zambello. The creators and Zambello were engaged for the project in 2006.

Lou Spisto, Executive Producer of the Tony Award®-winning Old Globe, is pleased to announce the world premiere of The First Wives Club — A New Musical, to be performed at the Old Globe Theatre July 15 August 23, 2009, as part of the Globes 2009 Summer Season. Based on the best-selling novel and Hollywood blockbuster of the same name, this Broadway-bound musical features a book by Tony winner Rupert Holmes (Curtains!, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, Say Goodnight Gracie) and a score by Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland, the threesome who created hits for Martha and The Vandellas, The Miracles, Marvin Gaye, The Four Tops and The Supremes. The production will be directed by award winning opera and theatrical director Francesca Zambello (The Little Mermaid for Disney on Broadway, Little House on the Prairie for the Guthrie Theatre, Rebecca at the Vienna Raimund Theatre and recently, Porgy and Bess and the Wagner Ring Cycle at the San Francisco Opera where she is the Artistic Advisor. Ms Zambello has won three Olivier Awards and has credits at The Metroplotan Opera, Teatro alla Scala, Royal Albert Hall, Bolshoi, Paris Opera, The Kennedy Center and the Chicago Lyric.)

The popular 1996 Paramount film The First Wives Club — about three divorced women who seek revenge on their former husbands — was based on Olivia Goldsmith's novel and featured a screenplay by Robert Harling. Marketing maven Paul Lambert and his producing partner Jonas Neilson will produce the musical. The hit film starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton, and grossed more than $130 million. They starred as Brenda, Elise and Annie, respectively, three women who aim to get their ex-husbands where it hurts most--the wallet.

Between 1963 and the end of 1967, Holland-Dozier- Holland wrote many of Motowns hit singles, with Brian writing the music, Eddie writing the lyrics, and Lamont doing both. Their hits included Heat Wave, Quicksand, and Nowhere To Run for Martha and The Vandellas, Mickeys Monkey for The Miracles, and Can I Get a Witness, Your a Wonderful One, and How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You) for Marvin Gaye. For The Four Tops, they penned such songs as Baby I Need Your Loving, I Cant Help Myself, and Bernadette, while they wrote many of the Supremes biggest hits including Baby Love, Stop! In the Name of Love, I Hear A Symphony, and You Cant Hurry Love.

Zambello--who will also be directing Disneys The Little Mermaid musical--was previously announced
as a strong candidate to direct the musical, which is based on the Olivia Goldsmith novel and the hit 1996 film comedy it inspired. Holmes, who won two Tony Awards for writing the book and score of The Mystery of Edwin Drood, has joined the production as librettist, according to the LA Daily News.

Zambello is renowned for her work staging both theatre and opera. Past productions include Lady in the Dark on the West End, West Side Story at the Bregenz Festival, Les Tryoens at the Metropolitan Opera and a Disney Theme Park staging of Aladdin. Holmes has also penned the book for the Broadwaybound Kander and Ebb musical Curtains. His many song hits include The Pina Colada Song, and he has also penned novels such as Where the Truth Lies and Swing. He also created the TV series Remember WENN.
